Inspirer and catalyst of 20th-century French culture, Jean Cocteau (Maisons-Laffitte 1889–Milly-la-Forêt 1963) bestowed on La Scala his talent as a scenographer. His spare luminous sign, the sobriety of his line, the elegance and clearness of his spaces enfold the music of the ballet La dame à la licorne (15th- and 16th-century music arranged by Chailley, 1965) and fashion the elegant, stifling room where the heroine of Poulenc’s La voix humaine (1959) pursues on the telephone an impossible love and encounters death.
