A personality practising several disciplines (painting, graphics, design, publishing and applied arts and above all architecture) with an original approach, Gio Ponti (Milan 1891–1979) associated all these experiences when he tackled the theatre. His stage drawings are ruled by a rational design, refined colour, an essential graphic line. These qualities are illustrated in the performances he created for La Scala, the ballet Festa romantica by Piccioli (1944) and Orfeo by Gluck (1947) as well as his unfinished projects, Mondo tondo by Porrino (1945) and Mitridate Eupatore by Alessandro Scarlatti (1954).
