Boris Bilinsky (1900–1948) is a name to be rediscovered.
Exiled from Russia, he soon became well-known as a draughtsman and poster designer in Berlin and Paris. His reputation was paramount among costume designers in the last days of silent film. His poster for Fritz Lang’s Metropolis created a sensation.
He made his debut at La Scala in 1947: he designed a ballet on the notes of Johann Strauss, Follie viennesi (Viennese Follies), a dizzy round of elegant, spectacular colours.
His artistic originality is also expressed in amazingly abstract graphic developments on music by Bach, Berlioz, Ravel.
