The sketches and fashion-plates of Renzo Vespignani (1924-2001) represent far more than an episode within his ample pictorial production. The specific weight of these authentic art works is such as to contain many of this artist’s typical themes: investigating organic matter and its metamorphoses, the panic sense of Nature, the spectacular variety of moods shifting over the human being’s thousand masks. In the Dionysian and tragic world of Hans Werner Henze (Die Bassariden, 1968) or the naturalistic atmosphere of Janáček’s Jenůfa (1974), the brilliancy of the stage design solutions for the Teatro alla Scala once again reveal the many-sided genius of a painter who deserves to be rediscovered.
